Afterschool and Summer Enrichment Programs Description

Our afterschool program for disadvantaged children ensures that children attending the program achieve developmentally appropriate academic goals by increasing their academic achievement and PACT test scores. We provide opportunity for academic success as well as personal development by providing a safe, nurturing environment that encourages constructive behavior during non-school hours. Afterschool sessions are held each day (5 days a week) from 2:30 - 6:00 pm at Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School for students enrolled at Dunston Elementary.

Bridge of Hope operates based on the concept that children learn best when it is engaging and fun. We utilize strategies such as small group settings, stations, hands-on learning, and games to actively engage our students and to promote learning. Our team of staff members include a Certified Teacher as the Educational Coordinator who supervises classroom instruction. We also have four Educators, each with a Bachelor's Degree, who teach students in the classroom and an ESL Coordinator/Program Assistant with a B.A. The Director of Bridge of Hope, Latanya Allen, (M.A.) oversees program operation.

During the afterschool program, children receive homework assistance and attend activities that reinforce math and language arts skills, focus on remedial studies, and review PACT standards. Children also have the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular activity each afternoon such as the computer lab and arts and crafts. Children participate in social skills and self-esteem development and cultural enrichment activities.

The LeapFrog SchoolHouse's LeapTrack system is a supplemental program we use to enhance standard-based lessons and activities implemented by our Educators in the classroom. LeapTrack provides continuous assessment to determine specific learning needs and offer clear, supportive feedback and individual learning paths, thereby counteracting the cycle in which students attribute poor performance to lack of ability and often becoming discouraged and less invested in learning.
